Your Body’s Stories: What Sensations Really Mean in Your Healing

Your Body Remembers What Your Mind Had to Forget

One of the most profound things I’ve learned in years of somatic work is this:
your body never loses the thread of your story.
Even when your mind tries to move on, rationalize, minimize, or make sense of what happened, your body continues to hold the truth.

After betrayal, most women expect emotional pain — sadness, anger, confusion. What often surprises them is how intensely their bodies respond:

A tightening in the chest.
A drop in the stomach.
A lump in the throat.
A buzzing in the legs.
A heaviness across the shoulders.

These sensations aren’t random or dramatic.
They are messages.

Your body is communicating in the only language it had available when the betrayal happened.

Sensation Is the Body’s First Language

Before you had words, before you had meaning, before you understood anything intellectually, your nervous system responded to the world through sensation. And it still does.

This is why people often say things like:

“I knew something was wrong because of how my chest tightened.”
“My throat closes every time I try to talk about my marriage.”
“I don’t feel sad, I just feel this band around my ribs.”
“I feel like I’m supposed to run, even though I don’t know where to go.”

These sensations are not proof that you’re overreacting or “still stuck.”
They are evidence that your body has been working overtime to protect you.

A Narrative You Might Recognize

I’ve had clients sit across from me and describe sensations that feel confusing or even embarrassing.

One woman shared that she didn’t cry at all anymore — but felt a tight band around her ribs every time she tried to rest. Another said her throat would close the second she began talking about her relationship. Someone else described a buzzing in her legs, like her body wanted to sprint away even while she sat perfectly still.

Different women, different sensations, yet all pointing to the same truth:

Their bodies were speaking long before their minds were ready.

These sensations weren’t failures.
They weren’t flaws.
They were invitations.

Your body is not trying to scare you — it’s trying to show you where something inside is finally ready to be understood.

The Body as a Messenger

I like to think of the body as a gentle messenger — one that carries truths we weren’t able to face at the time they happened. It doesn’t communicate in logic or full sentences. It communicates in tightening, softening, buzzing, heaviness, numbness, heat, and breath.

Overwhelming experiences get stored in the places where your system felt safest:

your chest
your belly
your throat
your pelvic floor
your shoulders

Not because you were disconnected or avoiding.
But because you were surviving.

In somatic sessions, I remind clients all the time:

Your body knows what to heal, and when to heal it.

Some sensations come forward because they are ready to be witnessed.
Others stay quiet a little longer because the system needs more safety first.

There is a wisdom to this timing.

In the work, we don’t force anything open. We don’t push the system. We don’t chase sensations.
We listen.
We allow.
We make space.

And we let your body lead — because rushing the body never helps.
Listening does.

So when a sensation arises — that tightening, that drop, that flutter, that heaviness — it’s not a problem. It’s your body stepping forward and saying,
“I think you’re ready for this now.”

what to heal and when to heal it

What Different Sensations Often Mean

This isn’t diagnostic — it’s human. It’s what I see every day in real women healing from real heartbreak.

Chest tightness often reflects bracing — preparing for impact, even when the threat is gone.
A drop in the stomach usually signals the original shock moment resurfacing.
A lump in the throat carries unspoken truth or swallowed feelings.
Heaviness in the shoulders often belongs to women who carried the emotional weight of the relationship alone.
Numbness is rarely disconnection — it’s the body saying, “This was too much, so I protected you.”

These sensations are not obstacles.
They are invitations back to yourself.

Why Sensations Often Intensify When You Start Healing

Many women think they’re “getting worse” when sensations get stronger.
In reality?

You’re thawing.

As safety increases — through somatic work, boundaries, support, or simply space — the body finally feels permission to bring forward what it had to silence during survival.

Peter Levine beautifully says,
“The body holds the unresolved story.”

When the story begins to unfreeze, sensation becomes your guide.

Try This: A 30-Second Sensation Check-In

Once a day, pause and gently ask your body:

“What are you trying to show me right now?”

You’re not looking for a dramatic answer.
You’re simply creating relationship.

Notice whether your breath softens…
whether something shifts…
whether you place a hand somewhere without thinking…
whether emotion stirs gently beneath the surface.

This is your body saying,
“Thank you for listening.”
