“Remember, your body is a powerful guide on your healing journey. By learning to trust and believe in its wisdom, you can find clarity, peace, and a deeper connection with yourself. It’s a practice that takes time, but the rewards are profound.”
In our journey through life, especially after experiencing betrayal, trauma, and divorce, reconnecting with ourselves can be incredibly challenging. Today, I want to share a concept that has been transformative in my healing journey:
Our bodies hold wisdom that our minds sometimes overlook, and learning to trust this inner guidance can be a powerful tool in our healing process.
Many of us have become disconnected from our bodies due to past trauma. We've learned to second-guess our instincts and rationalize away our feelings. However, our bodies often know what we need long before our minds catch up. Trusting this bodily wisdom can guide us toward deeper understanding and peace and a felt sense of safety.
Just the other day, I was having a vulnerable conversation with my husband, Scott. Initially, I felt fine, but the next day, as I reflected, my body felt unsettled. Trigger parts from previous betrayal began to surface, filling my mind with doubts about Scott and whether or not he was really telling me the truth. Rather than dismiss these feelings as paranoia or drama, I chose to believe my body first.
I mustered the courage to ask Scott some follow-up questions, expressing that I felt something was missing from our conversation. This took bravery, vulnerability, and a willingness to face his potential reactions. Guess what? Scott indeed had more to share. The additional information he provided wasn’t problematic but did give me clarity and peace. My body had known something was amiss, and trusting it led to a deeper understanding of where he was coming from. I felt even more connected to him afterwards as well as reassuring those past trauma parts that I was in fact safe right now.
One of my commitments to myself is never to self-betray. I won’t let the fear of others’ reactions stop me from trusting my body. This takes practice, and it hasn’t always been easy. But with time, it becomes more intuitive.
Here are a few ways you can start practicing believing your body:
Pause and Listen: When you feel unsettled or unsure, take a moment to pause. Sit quietly and listen to what your body is telling you. Notice any sensations, discomfort, or tension.
Journal Your Feelings: Writing down what you're feeling can help clarify your thoughts and emotions. Describe what your body is experiencing and any insights that come up.
Practice Mindfulness: Engage in mindfulness practices like meditation or deep breathing to reconnect with your body. This can help you become more attuned to its signals.
Validate Your Experience: Remind yourself that your feelings are valid. It's okay to feel what you're feeling, and it's important to acknowledge and honor these emotions. BELIEVE YOUR BODY.
Communicate Openly: Just as I did with Scott, practice open and honest communication. Share your feelings and concerns with those you trust, and don't be afraid to ask questions.
Remember, your body is a powerful guide on your healing journey. By learning to trust and believe in its wisdom, you can find clarity, peace, and a deeper connection with yourself. It’s a practice that takes time, but the rewards are profound.
